HQP – TRAINING

In response to the projected shortage of manufacturing engineers with interdisciplinary training in Canadian industries, NSERC CANRIMT was to train and graduate engineers with advanced interdisciplinary experience.

The graduates would be able to work as shop, machine design, instrumentation, CAD/CAM, CAE, machining process and metrology engineers. In addition, a number of Ph.D. students were expected to take up academic positions in Canadian universities, and so continue to build capability in the area of manufacturing research here at home.

As outlined in the original NSERC CANRIMT II Research Proposal, the research projects are to be carried out by approximately 34 Ph.D. students, 31 Master’s students, 13.5 postdoctoral fellows and 4 .6 research engineers, and 19 undergraduates.

The Network researchers are expected to also assist in the training of HQP by NSERC CANRIMT II Graduate Student Advisory Council , formed to consult with their counterparts at the other Network universities, and to advise the Scientific Committee on various topics related to training and other student matters.

It is hoped that by June 2021, NSERC CANRIMT II will meet and far exceed the proposed number of hirings of HQP, with a cumulative total of 59.6 since July 2016 (23.5 MASC and M.Eng. students, 24 Ph.D. students,6 Postdoctoral Fellows and 5.1 Technical/Professional personnel)  (see the table below.)
